WE CARE, the charitable arm of the Nassau County Bar Association, was founded in 1988 by Association Past President Stephen Gassman. Conceived as a vehicle for the organized bar to use its resources to improve the quality of life for those in need, and nurtured by the tireless efforts of lawyers and judges, the WE CARE program has matured into a nationally recognized model for similar programs of other bar groups.With the financial support and personal effort of so many, WE CARE has been able to serve the community in myriad ways.
Partial Listing of Projects Sponsored by WE CARE:
- Annual party at Domus for over 250 disadvantaged and physically challenged children
- Funding for the Senior Citizen Legal Clinic conducted monthly at Domus
- Financial support for the Nassau County Family Court Emergency Fund, providing carfare for indigent individuals who appear in Family Court, and refreshments at the Family Court Nursery for children of litigants
- Sponsors Christmas Eve Dinner for disadvantaged youth
- Financial support of the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence
- Grant to FOCUS ("For Our Children and Us") for child support program
- Financial support to the Education and Assistance Corporation (EAC) for a supervised visitation center
- Donation of furnishings, sports equipment, Christmas dinner, and toiletries to emergency shelters for runaway homeless youth
- Funding for a safe home for abused families
- Financial support for P.E.A.C.E. ("Parent Education and Custodial Effectiveness"), an educational program for separating and divorcing spouses
- Scholarships for high school students who exemplify academic achievement, community service, and personal perseverance in light of extreme and challenging life circumstances
- Funding for The Maurer Foundation's Breast Cancer Prevention Education in medically undeserved communities
- Sponsors a week at Kamp Kiwanis for underprivileged psychologically distressed or physically handicapped children
- Supports two minority-oriented Girl Scout troops
- Funding an outing to a Mets game for disadvantaged youths
- Sponsors Thanksgiving Dinner for 100 Senior Citizens
- Establishment of the WE CARE Children's Garden of Hope, a celebration of life at Hewlett House, the comprehensive resource center for Breast Cancer
The WE CARE Fund welcomes general contributions as well as donations in memory of a loved one or in honor of a special occasion. Upon receipt of a contribution, acknowledgment cards are sent.
