BOLD

(Bridge Over Language Divides)

The BOLD Task Force was launched in 2009 to help NCBA be more responsive to the changing ethnic diversity of Nassau County by enhancing the ability to provide legal services and education in communities that speak languages other than English. BOLD works to incorporate non-English languages in all areas of NCBA’s activities and services to better reach out to these communities.

Language Line Available

The Nassau County Bar Association has Language Line services, which enables the staff to access interpreters in 170 languages for incoming phone calls. Callers who do not speak English well or who do not speak English at all will be connected with an appropriate interpreter. There is no cost for this service.

To Find a Lawyer

The Nassau County Bar Association established the Lawyer Referral Information Service (LRIS) to provide trained personalized assistance to help find the right lawyer for legal concerns.   Anyone calling NCBA for lawyer referral will be connected with an appropriate translator to best determine the type of legal assistance needed. LRIS Staff will attempt to find an attorney fluent in the caller’s language. All the attorneys are in good standing with the New York State Office of Court Administration. It is important to seek competent legal assistance before a situation becomes a serious problem.

Special Programs

BOLD presents educational programs for the local community, often in languages other than English. BOLD has hosted programs in Haitian Creole on the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program, and currently provides Spanish-speaking attorneys at NCBA’s monthly Mortgage Foreclosure Legal Consultation Clinics. A citizenship demonstration interview was held in partnership with the USCIS to benefit members of diverse ethnic communities. For future programs to assist individuals from diverse ethnic communities, see the NCBA Calendar.
